As the Chairperson of the Great Western Tiers Tourism Association (GWTTA), I’m excited to introduce this new monthly column, where we’ll highlight the incredible destinations and experiences the Meander Valley has to offer. Whether you’re a visitor seeking adventure or a local looking to explore your own backyard, our region is home to some of Tasmania’s most stunning landscapes, rich heritage, and passionate small business operators.
The GWTTA is a collective of local businesses and tourism operators working together to promote the Meander Valley as a must-visit destination. From breathtaking hikes in the Great Western Tiers to artisan food and drink experiences, boutique accommodations, and unique cultural attractions, our region has something for everyone. Our goal is to support and connect businesses, helping them thrive while ensuring visitors experience the best of what we have to offer.
Letter to the Editor
One of our key priorities is increasing collaboration among tourism operators, businesses, and community groups. By working together, we can strengthen our local economy and create new opportunities for growth. The GWTTA provides resources, networking opportunities, and marketing support to help businesses reach a wider audience. Whether it’s through regional promotion, industry workshops, or advocacy, we are committed to championing local tourism.
The Meander Valley is not just a gateway to Tasmania’s wilderness; it is an experience in itself. Visitors can explore the stunning landscapes of the Great Western Tiers, where walking trails lead to hidden waterfalls, scenic lookouts, and pristine alpine environments.
The region’s rich agricultural heritage is reflected in the abundance of farmgate produce, with opportunities to taste award-winning cheeses, sample premium spirits, and enjoy fresh seasonal ingredients at local cafés and restaurants. Heritage towns such as Deloraine and Westbury offer a glimpse into Tasmania’s colonial past, with beautifully preserved streetscapes and museums telling the story of early settlers.
Beyond the natural beauty, our vibrant arts and culture scene is another drawcard for visitors. The Meander Valley is home to many talented artists, galleries, and events such as the annual Tasmanian Craft Fair – the largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Live music, festivals, and workshops bring the community together and create a dynamic atmosphere that welcomes tourists and locals alike.
If you’re a local business owner, tourism operator, or someone passionate about showcasing the Meander Valley, we invite you to become a member of the GWTTA. Joining means being part of a dedicated network that values sustainable tourism and community-driven success. Members benefit from collective marketing efforts, participation in industry events, and advocacy for regional tourism development. Together, we can enhance the visitor experience, attract more people to our region, and ensure that tourism continues to benefit our local economy.
Tourism plays a vital role in supporting our local businesses, from accommodation and eateries to tour operators and retailers. Every visitor who stays in the region contributes to jobs and economic growth. By working together, we can ensure that our local tourism industry remains strong, resilient, and future-focused.
In the coming months, we’ll be sharing insights on must-visit locations, upcoming events, and the people behind the businesses that make the Meander Valley special. Our goal is to showcase the diversity of experiences available and encourage both visitors and locals to explore more of what’s on offer.
Stay tuned, and if you’d like to get involved or learn more about the GWTTA, we’d love to hear from you. You can find more details on our website at www.greatwesterntiers.org.au.
