Ah, summer! A time for fun, relaxation, and pretending you can get a “healthy glow” without looking like a lobster by the end of the week. For some, it’s filled with outdoor adventures and barbeques, while for others, it’s a busy season with a long to-do list. And for a few, it can feel like a solo journey of isolation, especially if you’re more into binge-watching Netflix than beach outings. But with a few simple steps, summer can be enjoyable for everyone and offer benefits long after it ends.

The sun is a ball of fun but can be harsh on your skin. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are linked to skin cancer and photoaging, so let’s take precautions to protect ourselves.

Letter to the Editor

4-Step Plan to Beat the Sun:

  1. Slip on Protective Clothing: Long sleeves and pants might sound like a crazy idea in the heat, but modern fabrics are light, breathable and offer protection. If you can see through your clothes, UV rays can too. So, don’t wear that see-through shirt and think you’re safe.
  2. Slop on Sunscreen: SPF 50 is your best friend. Apply it on all exposed skin 20 minutes before heading outside and reapply every 2 hours, or more often if swimming, sweating or pretending to do yoga in the backyard. Remember, sunscreen is not a replacement for avoiding the sun at peak.
  3. Slap on a Hat: Choose a broad-brimmed hat that shades your ears and neck. No one looks cool with a sunburn, trust me. Make your hat fashionable and functional.
  4. Wrap on Sunglasses: Not those cheap ones from the petrol station. Get yourself a pair with UV protection — otherwise, you might end up with cataracts and eyelid cancer before you’re 50. Polarized lenses block the glare so you can see without squinting like you’re trying to spot a rare bird in the distance. Bonus points if they make you look like a movie star.

Summer = Health and Wellness Opportunity

Summer’s longer days offer more opportunities to get active. Whether it’s a morning walk, bike ride, or swim. If it’s too hot out, take it indoors. The gym is a great place to lift weights, do pilates, or pretend you’re not checking out everyone else’s form at a class. Moving more isn’t just for physical health. It’s great for mental health too! Plus, it builds muscle and strengthens bones which increases your ability to be independent as you age.

Summer is peak season for fresh, local produce. In the Meander Valley, we’re surrounded by locally grown fruit and veggies that taste so good they might just make you forget about that giant slab of chocolate you’re craving. Seasonal produce is like nature’s candy and is at its peak nutritional value, packed with vitamins, antioxidants and fibre. And don’t forget to hydrate like a champion because sweating it out can leave you parched. Remember, you’re not a cactus. You need water.

Mental Health: It Doesn’t Take a Holiday

While long days can lift your spirits, they can also amplify stress, loneliness, or mental health concerns. The holidays might bring family tension, financial stress or just an overwhelming feeling. If you’re feeling burdened, take a moment to breathe, and remember, it’s okay to ask for help.

Self-care isn’t just about spa days; it’s about checking in with yourself, sharing your feelings, and talking to people who get it. If seeing a GP feels daunting, there are other options, like Rural Alive & Well (RAW) who service our rural areas (call 1800 729 827) or the Tasmanian State Government 24/7 helpline (1800 332 388). Don’t hesitate to ask for help — it’s a sign of strength. Also, check in on your mates. A simple “How are you?” can make a big difference. Summer is better when we’re all looking out for each other.

So there you have it: the sun-safety and health-boosting guide to thriving this summer.

With a little extra care and attention, we can make this summer a time of balance, health, and connection for all in our community. Now, get out there, stay safe, and enjoy the season! But remember, the only thing that should be sizzling is the barbeque, not your skin.
