In a small, bustling corner of Deloraine, musician and artist Andi Mara and his wife Shenn have created a vibrant cultural hub in Shandi’s Corner, a store filled with handcrafted clothing that marries Indonesian textile traditions with Tasmania’s distinctive climate. While the shop’s bright and layered designs catch the eye, it’s Andi’s story and his connection to the community that make this shop unique.

Andi, originally from Indonesia, stands at the intersection of cultures and artistry. His wife Shenn, who oversees the design of their clothing line, brings a delicate balance of style and warmth suitable for Tasmania’s famously variable weather. “We have five seasons a day here,” Andi says with a laugh, describing how the clothing is tailored to transition seamlessly from daytime to evening wear. The designs embrace a blend of practicality and style, offering pieces that can be dressed up for a formal occasion or worn casually.

The fabrics Andi and his family use are sourced from multiple places, reflecting their sustainable ethos. Indonesian cotton, Indian saris, and local wool make up much of their material. “We are very natural-friendly,” he notes, ensuring each piece is crafted responsibly.

For Andi, the journey to building this business was not just about crafting clothing; it was about finding a home in a foreign land. “We’re not from Tasmania,” he explains, “but artists in Deloraine invited us to join them here.” The move marked a significant shift, enabling Andi and his wife to set up Shandi’s Corner in 2017, with the community quickly embracing them. Andi and Shenn eventually found themselves fully integrated into Deloraine’s artistic circles, receiving multiple exhibition windows and forming strong local ties. Today, Andi affectionately calls Deloraine “Arty Party town.”

Though known locally for his fashion, Andi’s roots are in music. He recalls a childhood in his village where music was as essential as morning coffee, explaining that he grew up drumming alongside family members who crafted clothing. In Deloraine, Andi rekindled this musical tradition, mentoring local students in drumming through a community program. “I call it The 3rd Room,” he says, referring to his music room within the shop where he combines his two passions: fashion and music. This space is where Andi teaches music, especially drumming, to anyone interested in connecting through rhythm.

Beyond the store, Andi’s resilience has also deeply shaped his outlook. Moving to Australia meant adapting not only to a new language but also to a different lifestyle. The first few years were hard, he admits, and he often thought of returning to Indonesia. But through the support of his “Aussie family” and the friendships forged in Deloraine, Andi has found a sense of belonging. “Music brought me friends,” he reflects, mentioning his involvement in community events like Anzac Day celebrations.

The first few years were tough, with no family here, but my Aussie friends and my Aussie mum have become my support.

Today, Andi balances his professional life with caregiving responsibilities for his wife, who has faced health challenges. This role has shifted his long-term plans, but his outlook remains optimistic. “My wife is getting stronger, that’s all I need,” he says with a smile, expressing gratitude for the life they’ve built together.

Andi, a beloved figure in Deloraine with his vibrant personality and ability to speak five languages, has worked tirelessly with Shenn to build Shandi’s Corner into the business it is today. Beyond the shop, Andi contributes richly to the town’s spirit, mentoring in music, connecting through local events, and fostering deep community ties. As he balances his business and caring for his wife, he remains hopeful for a positive future, grateful for the life they’ve crafted and the community that has embraced them.
