As Tasmania heads to the polls again, voters in Lyons will choose from a diverse field of candidates vying to represent them in the stateโ€™s largest electorate. From seasoned political figures to fresh contenders, each brings their own vision for the region. Hereโ€™s a quick look at candidates standing in Lyons in the 2025 federal election.

Labor

Cost of Living

Labor will stop any sell-off of government assets, including Metro and state-owned energy businesses, to ensure Tasmanians will not pay more for essential services such as power and vehicle registration. Our responsible economic management will direct funding where it is needed and minimise waste.

Health

After 11 years of the Liberals Tasmaniaโ€™s health system needs a fresh start. We look forward to sharing more details about our positive plan throughout the campaign and we can guarantee there will be no privatisation of health facilities under a Labor government.

Economy

Labor backs industries that offer good, well-paid local jobs to Tasmanians so we can make sure young people donโ€™t have to leave the state. We will stop taxpayer money being wasted through delayed and bungled infrastructure projects, ban bonuses for failed executives and boost oversight of government businesses.

Proposed stadium Hobart

Labor supports a Tasmanian team in the AFL and accepts that we cannot have a team without the stadium proposed for Macquarie Point in Hobart. Frankly, I think Tasmanians are sick of politicians and the media talking about this so much.

Housing

We will help people buy their first home by expanding stamp-duty concessions to new homes to boost demand. To get builders and developers moving we will cut the red tape that is holding back approvals too record low levels. We will hold councils accountable for their planning bureaucracy.

Environment

We believe renewable energy is key to protecting our environment. Previous Labor governments had the foresight to build the Hydro and we will reduce red tape for clean energy projects that can similarly be a game-changer for our state. We want to ensure our cities can offer better public transport.

Education

Education ensures every young Tasmanian can make the most of their opportunities. We are proud to be the party for public education and we look forward to release more plans throughout the election. We back Tasmaniaโ€™s university as it evolves to offer what works best for students.

Why vote for you

Tasmania needs change. We know the stateโ€™s finances are in a terrible state after a decade of mismanagement. Labor has a proud history of making Tasmania a better place through investment and bold ideas that have brought people together. Tasmania needs a fresh start, and only Labor can deliver it.

Liberal

Cost of living

Transport is essential for those who live in regional areas. Our half-price bus fares delivered in rural and regional areas have helped thousands reduce the cost of travel and are extended for a further 12 months. Our Area Connect Service is helping regional Tasmanians connect to training and jobs.

Health

The Liberal Government is delivering better emergency care in Lyons, with a new Longford ambulance station being built and 78 more paramedics being recruited across the State – including at Deloraine District Hospital. While Labor and the Greens argue, weโ€™ve been delivering better healthcare.

Economy

Tasmania has continued its run of being one of the top economies in Australia. Powered by our small businesses, our regional workforces and our โ€œget on with the job attitudeโ€, Tasmaniaโ€™s economic growth shows weโ€™re performing well above the national average.

Proposed stadium in Hobart

The stadium will create thousands of construction jobs, many for northern and north-west tradies and businesses. With $130 million for UTAS Stadium and $25 million into Dial Park, weโ€™re backing regional sport, jobs and aspiration. This is about building statewide opportunity and ensuring the north gets its fair share of the AFL dream.

Housing

Tasmania is leading the nation in social housing growth, with more than 4,380 social and affordable homes already delivered. We are well on track to meet our target of 10,000 additional homes by 2032. Backed by record investment, we are reshaping housing delivery to meet the needs of all Tasmanians.

Environment

The Liberals are about providing certainty and stability for Tasmanians, keeping our economy strong, supporting our regional communities while protecting those natural assets that are important to all of us – as Tasmanians. We do this through investment in protecting priority species, investment in strategic waste diversion programs and supporting our scientists to undertake their best work in the region.

Education

The Liberals understand the importance of a studentโ€™s surroundings in supporting learning and high-quality teaching. Weโ€™re committed to providing the best possible schools and have committed $188 million to deliver major upgrades for 15 schools through our Building Blitz program including Deloraine High School and Campbell Town District High School.

Why vote for you

Jeremy Rockliff and the Liberal team are offering a clear plan, a united team, and the leadership to get on with it.

Greens

Cost of Living

While Tasmanians are struggling with the cost of living, the Liberals and Labor want a billion-dollar Hobart stadium. With a new government and the Greens in the balance of power, weโ€™ll scrap the stadium, and invest instead in free public transport and schools, reducing power bills and limiting rent increases.

Health

Hospitals are overflowing, surgery waitlists are years long and ambulance wait times are longer than ever. The Greens have been a strong voice for health, creating the ambulance ramping inquiry and forcing the government to hire more paramedics. Weโ€™ll keep pushing equitable health access across Lyons.

Economy

Liberal and Laborโ€™s stadium will be a billion-dollar budget black hole thatโ€™s the wrong priority. They wonโ€™t stand up the corporations wrecking our environment without paying a single cent. In the balance of power, the Greens will fight to stop the stadium, and make big corporations pay their fair share.

Proposed stadium Hobart

Tasmanians deserve AFL/ AFLW teams, but we shouldnโ€™t be bullied into building a billion-dollar stadium. Liberal and Labor have broken promises and tried everything to fast-track the stadium, while the Greens have consistently been the strongest voice against it. Vote Green to say no to the stadium, yes to our team.

Housing

Finding an affordable home has become a nightmare. The Liberals havenโ€™t built enough houses, theyโ€™ve let rents skyrocket and AirBnB take over. Weโ€™ll fight to ensure housing is treated as a human right, by building more public and affordable homes instead of a stadium, controlling rising rents and limiting AirBnB.

Environment

The Greens have always stood for protecting Tassieโ€™s environment, and we always will. Weโ€™ll fight for climate action, and to protect our forests and our waterways. After decades of destruction by Liberal and Laborโ€™s mates in logging and salmon farming, itโ€™s time we cleaned up this mess.

Education

Quality education for our kids should be a priority for the government. Yet the Liberals are cutting jobs in education to fund their billion-dollar stadium, and Laborโ€™s backing them in. The Greens want to invest in education to ensure Tasmania is no longer left behind other states and territories.

Why vote for you

Tasmania deserves MPs who will put our people and special places before political stunts and big corporates. This election, with a new government and the Greens in the balance of power, weโ€™ll fight to stop the stadium and instead invest in health and housing, and protect our islandโ€™s unique environment.

Angela Offord

Cost of Living

I will advocate for and support initiatives that can ease the rising cost of living pressures affecting many of us. For eg energy bill relief, reduced prescription medicines, reintroduction of bulk billing, more Medicare Urgent Care Clinics, childcare subsidies and measures to address housing affordability.

Health

I am passionate about measures that will attract and retain doctors and nurses and services especially in regional areas, shorten waiting times in ED, make aged care services easier to access and increase the number of Medicare subsidised mental health services.

Economy

I will work to stimulate economic growth through innovation, job creation, and fostering local industries. I will support continual road improvement to handle heavy transport and promote safety. I support long overdue changes to the Freight Equalisation Scheme.

I would consider all options to make our budget sustainable.

Proposed stadium Hobart

Tasmania is now the state with the highest debt and deficit per capita in Australia. Urgent budget reform is required. The state cannot afford a stadium until the stateโ€™s finances are under control. My hope is that the AFL and Tasmania government can renegotiate the terms of the deal so that Tasmanians can have the AFL team we deserve and we can address the issue of a stadium in the future when our finances allow.

Housing

I would consider all options on the table for eg/ building more housing while supporting the critical infrastructure required to foster healthy communities, continued assistance for first home buyers and rental caps as well as ending tax breaks for investors provided any measures are properly researched and costed and are not inflationary.

We need to address youth homelessness and the number of women in their 60s and 70s facing homelessness.

Environment

Iโ€™ll champion sustainable practices preserving our unique natural environment while supporting local conservation efforts.

Forestry, fishing, mining and agriculture are important and essential industries but they MUST be sustainable and properly regulated.

Education

I will prioritise funding for our public schools, enhancing resources and support for students and educators alike and will take action on recommendations in the many reports on and investigations into problems in our education system in Tasmania. I support the continuation of Free TAFE and HECs debt relief.

Why vote for you

I am an independent candidate that will authentically represent the people of Lyons and will not be influenced by vested interests, party ideology or politics.

I will work collaboratively and consultatively on long term robust policy to achieve great outcomes for the people of Lyons and Tasmania.

Jiri Lev

Cost of Living

Demonopolise. Competition to Coles & Woolworths – bring Aldi to Tasmania. Review energy pricing structure, especially for low income households. Current system is poorly designed.

Health

Health and healthcare is first priority. Improve access and affordability of healthcare. Prevention, including man-made environmental pollution. Respect and protection for emergency services.

Economy

Balance the budget with realistic, responsible spending and no unnecessary debt. Support local production, resource processing and manufacturing. Revive traditional industries. Build and promote the โ€œMade in Tasmaniaโ€ brand. Grow environmentally sensitive tourism, such as tourist train services, including steam.

Proposed stadium Hobart

Yes to the team, no to a stadium ruining the character of central Hobart (our key tourism drawcard) and the very significant unnecessary cost of building it there. Renovate an existing stadium or build a new stadium at a more suitable location.

Housing

A pathway for all Tasmanians, including public housing tenants and applicants to build their own homes, under builderโ€™s supervision, gaining equity in their new rent-to-own houses, as well as skills and income potential. First home owner funding conditioned to result in better homes and stronger communities, not just increased prices.

Environment

Support responsible farming (including salmon), forestry or mining. Where necessary, incentivise businesses to improve practice. Protect both jobs and the environment by discouraging lazy shortcuts. Replace forestry and agricultural burn-offs and toxic chemicals with international best practice alternatives. Phase out toxins and microplastics from our food chain.

Education

Merit-based free university and TAFE for diligent students. Value-based education debt waivers for essential professionals, such as doctors, nurses or teachers who live and work in Tasmania. Honour and encourage trade and craft training as a better alternative to unproductive university study, such as dropped degrees.

Why vote for you

My policies are environmentally conscious yet moderately conservative – something not seen in any political party. Ideas, not ideology. Policy, not politics. No campaign funding, no hidden sponsors.
