One of Australia’s oldest existing racecourses has been transformed into a public recreational space, with the official opening of the Deloraine Racecourse Precinct marking the end of a redevelopment project almost two years in the making.

Acting Meander Valley Mayor Stephanie Cameron joined the Honourable Rebecca White MP, council staff and children from local schools at the opening, which celebrates the revival of a site that held its final race meet in March 2005 and sat largely unused for nearly two decades after.

Letter to the Editor

Community consultation began in October 2023 to help determine the site’s future, with demolition of redundant structures and revitalisation works both commencing in late 2024.

The finished precinct includes walking tracks, open parkland, an all-ages play space, public amenities and historical wayfinding signage. The original grandstand, start gate and replica steeples have been retained, preserving the site’s racing heritage alongside its new public use.

The Deloraine Turf Club and community members with strong connections to the site contributed stories and recollections that are reflected in the interpretive signage installed throughout the grounds.

Acting Mayor Cameron says the precinct was about more than its physical features. “It’s about creating a place where people can come together, to get active, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy being part of our community,” she says.

The project was delivered through a partnership between the Australian Government and Meander Valley Council, at a total cost of more than $4 million. The Australian Government contributed $3.35 million through the Community Development Grants Programme, with the council contributing more than $800,000 and leading project delivery.

Hon Rebecca White MP says it was pleasing to see an important part of Deloraine’s history given new life. “For people across the Meander Valley this is now a place to come together to enjoy a walk, spend time with family, enjoy a BBQ or a play at the park.”
