The historic township of Westbury will take a lively turn this St Valentine’s Day, with the sounds of traditional Irish music set to fill the Town Hall and Supper Room in an evening dedicated to Ireland’s rich musical heritage.

Presented by the Westbury Action Group and Arts Deloraine, the event will feature Session Players Tasmania Ceili Band, a group known for its vibrant and authentic take on centuries-old Irish tunes. The band brings together a lineup of accomplished musicians, including Heath Richardson on Uilleann pipes, fiddle and stomp box, Louise Conroy on fiddle, Griffith Martin on guitar, and Eleanor Deeth as dance caller.

Letter to the Editor

The evening promises heaps of foot-stomping fun and a chance to immerse in music deeply grounded in Irish history, places, people and memories.

Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start, with the night expected to wind up around 9.30pm. Drinks and snacks will be available from the adjoining Supper Room, with Arts Deloraine offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Guests are also welcome to bring their own snacks.

The band is encouraging attendees to come dance, laugh, smile and experience the truly great spirit that has kept this music alive to this day, with the added invitation to dress up or attend in fancy dress if attendees choose.

Tickets are $20 for adults, while children aged 14 and under can attend free if accompanied by an adult. Tickets available at the door.

There is some uncertainty around the future of Westbury Town Hall and whether it will continue to host events such as this after upcoming renovations. For some, the evening may represent a last opportunity to experience a traditional dance in the historic venue.

With strong Irish roots, Westbury offers a fitting backdrop for the celebration, promising an evening of cultural connection and community spirit!
