Hello! I am Auroara, a fifteen-year-old, and this is my Day of Life in Hokitika, New Zealand.

My day starts off where I get ready to go out for a walk. My family and I head to Blue Spur Bushwalk. With its old tunnels and mining equipment, it was super interesting and really pretty. I love being out in the forest. The New Zealand bush is really thick and dense; you can hear cicadas and birds singing in the treetops. We have many types of ferns and vines here.

Next stop, Lake Kaniere, a beautiful glacial lake, for a day of swimming! We took our kayak down to the lake. I’ve gotten fairly good and kayaked out to the islands in the lake. There’s a short walk there, and it’s gorgeous. There’s a nice life and aura to the island; it just feels wild. Afterwards I explored around the islands and found lake mussels in the sand and lily pad clusters growing in patches. We had our lunch on the lakeshore. The lake is surrounded by a crescent of snowy mountains on one side, the lake glitters in the sunlight, and people swim and boat on its surface. I stayed in the water for hours before we went home.

Later we walked down to the beach. The beach is covered in driftwood, and it is easy to make up a bonfire. The beach is a mix of sandy and rocky, but mostly sand. A stream carves its way over the sand, changing every day. We cooked up some sausages and explored the beach. Finding greenstone on the beach is common here in Hokitika. I caught the sunset and watched the fiery colours fade to a dim, dark blue. Absolutely beautiful. It was time to go home as darkness fell. It was yet another amazing day in Hokitika.
