Westmorland Falls: A hidden gem in the Meander Valley

On a bright, sunny Saturday, we set out to explore one of the Meander Valley’s short walks — and Westmorland Falls seemed to tick all the right boxes. The guide described it as a two-hour return track, graded Level 2, so we packed some water, grabbed our hats, and hit the road.

It’s only a short drive from Deloraine to the little village of Caveside, where we found a modest car park already dotted with cars — a clear sign that we weren’t the only ones drawn to this spot. The trail begins gently, winding beneath towering trees and through lush undergrowth. But it soon became apparent that the Level 2 rating might have been a little generous. There are a few steeper, uneven sections that make you earn the view — though that’s half the fun.

Letter to the Editor

As we ventured deeper into the forest, the murmur of running water began to build. Each bend in the track revealed something new: fern-filled gullies, moss-covered logs, and that unmistakable scent of cool, damp rainforest. I remember thinking that even without a waterfall at the end, the walk itself would have been worth it. As the saying goes, it’s not the destination but the journey that matters — and this journey was magic.

Then we arrived, and the destination more than delivered. Westmorland Falls cascades gracefully down a series of rocky steps, framed by thick green ferns and dappled sunlight. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause, breathe deeply, and simply take it all in — a pocket of serenity that feels untouched by time.

After our walk, we rewarded ourselves with a stop at a nearby winery, where a relaxed platter and a glass of local wine made the perfect ending to the afternoon.

Westmorland Falls is one of five short walks recently promoted as part of the Great Western Tiers Short Walks, a collection showcasing Meander Valley as the “capital of short walks” in Tasmania. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, these trails are a brilliant way to experience a side of Tasmania that’s often overlooked — a world of rich rainforests, quiet creeks, and natural beauty, all nestled in the Meander Valley Region.
