The Deloraine Dramatic Society’s production of The Wizard of Oz community musical was a highly ambitious endeavour with many challenges, but a can-do attitude made it enjoyable for all involved. It allowed our younger generation to realise how, with confidence and guidance, they are both capable and adaptable. Some of the younger cast members are very much involved with the local Youth Drama Group, who will be presenting at the Society’s Youth Drama Festival in September. Keep your eyes and ears posted for other events throughout the year.
Since the Deloraine presentation other, larger, local theatres recognised what can be achieved for such a complex, challenging production as The Wizard of Oz on a limited budget. The tornado scene, achieved with not much more than a whirling cardboard cow, was a crowd favourite.

For the production the group acquired the capability to project images and videos onto the back of the stage, which complemented the already imaginative physical scenery. Many of the images were taken from original paintings by talented artist and Society member Kath Wilmott. Overall, it was an extraordinary achievement for a small but vibrant theatre group, which was acknowledged by being awarded the Meander Valley Council’s Community Event of the Year.
