“The little shop down by the round-a-bout” – that is what people will tell you when you ask where the Golden Opportunity Shop has been for well over 35 years.

“How did it come to be?” is often asked by customers.  This is what we know: Well over 70 years ago, ladies of the Christian Churches in the area started selling second hand goods from the boot of their car – as one 90 year old Deloraine resident told us:  “I used to help the ladies when I was in my late teens”. This charitable gesture to support the community, then grew to a small outlet at the top end of Emu Bay Road Deloraine until it moved into its current premises at 11 Emu Bay Road.

Letter to the Editor

“The Golden Opportunity Shop certainly hits above its weight when it comes to community support” – it’s motto – ‘WHAT YOU SPEND HERE STAYS IN OUR COMMUNITY”.

Run by a dedicated team of 20 volunteers – who generously give their time and effort – the shop sells donated clothing, bric-a-brac, linen and other smaller items. It welcomes donations all year round that are in a clean and good condition. Due to the size of the store it is unable to sell larger items such as furniture,  children’s toys and whitegoods. Customers can purchase items with cash and EFTPOS.

During October 2025 the GO Shop pledged that all proceeds from sales made for the month of October would be donated to an “all Cancers” related cause that supported the community.  To quote:  “many of us in our community have been touched, affected by some form of Cancer”.  The shop is pleased to announce that due to the generosity of its customers $9000 was raised and this is now being distributed to worthy causes.

There is a lot of behind the scenes work involved: sorting donations, pricing, cleaning and, of course, selling to our wonderful customers – we thank you all.  Without your support we would not be able to operate as we do. Our history records are very sketchy and we ask if you have information about our beginnings and have been involved with the organisation well into our past – please get in touch by coming into our shop!
