The Deloraine Squash Club came alive over 24–26 May as it hosted the second Jesse Youd Memorial Deloraine Open Squash Tournament, transforming the Alvestone Drive courts into a buzzing hub of competition, camaraderie and community spirit. With players aged 7 to 84 stepping onto the court, the weekend became a celebration not just of squash, but of the people who make the sport what it is.
Squash is often compared to chess for good reason. Every rally becomes a tactical puzzle where players must anticipate patterns, set traps and think several shots ahead. Nowhere was that more obvious than in the thrilling matchups between lightning-fast juniors and seasoned veterans. The juniors brought raw speed and explosive movement, but the veterans countered with the calm precision of grandmasters — controlling the T-position. Spectators were treated to dramatic momentum swings, cunning shot selection and the kind of mental stamina that turns a physical contest into a strategic duel, keeping everyone on the edge of their seat.

The juniors were out in force as well, with three divisions showcasing the impressive depth of talent rising through the ranks — a promising sign for the future of squash in Tasmania. Many of these young players took on both junior and senior divisions across the weekend, logging huge hours on court and proving they could hold their own at every level. Their commitment, resilience, and standout results underscored just how bright the next generation looks.

Sarah captured Division 7, Casey won Junior Division 3, and Dawson fought hard for third place in the same division. Their achievements weren’t just wins — they were moments that connected the past, present and future of the Youd family with the sport Jesse loved.
