The Westbury Shamrocks Cricket Club has enjoyed a strong and competitive start to the 2025 cricket season, with all four senior men’s teams and the senior women’s side performing well across their respective grades.
The 1st Grade Men’s side remains undefeated in the Greater Northern Cup (One-Day competition), with impressive wins against Launceston, Wynyard, Sheffield and Burnie. Former captain and current premiership player Daniel Murfet has led the way with the bat, showing the consistency and experience that have made him a cornerstone of the club.

Young opener Cooper Kedey has made a brilliant start to his first season in 1st Grade, highlighted by a composed 70 against Wynyard to anchor a vital win. Captain Joel Lloyd has also been in fine form, notching a superb 117 against Sheffield at home to guide the Shamrocks to victory.
Ollie Wood, a Greater Northern Raiders representative and current Shamrocks premiership player, has continued his excellent form with the ball. When available for Westbury, he has led the wicket-taking tally and impressed for the Raiders in the Cricket Tasmania Premier League, as the northern side aims to challenge the dominance of Hobart-based teams.
The Women’s team has started their campaign in fantastic fashion, sitting on a 4–1 record —their best start since joining the competition three years ago. Despite falling narrowly to Riverside in their last match, the Lady Shamrocks have dominated their other fixtures. Under the guidance of coach Aiden Bennett, the team has shown impressive growth and confidence. Standout performances from Stacey Norton-Smith, who has been consistent with the bat, and co-captain Summer Cherdron, who has excelled with both bat and ball, have been instrumental. Allrounder Cassie Walker and young quick Charlotte Clayton have also made valuable contributions.
In 2nd Grade, club coach Chathura Athukorala set the tone early with a blistering 140 off 98 balls in the season opener at Riverside. Though that match ended in a narrow defeat, the team bounced back strongly thanks to Jordan French, who scored his maiden century for the club (106 off 92) to secure their first win of the season — an effort celebrated well into the night at major sponsor the Cock ’n’ Bull.

3rd Grade has enjoyed a dominant start, led by new recruit Robindeep Singh, who currently tops the competition’s run-scoring list. Club favourite Mohammadzuber Diwan has also been in great touch, while Sahil Choudhary’s five-wicket haul helped lift the team to the top of the ladder. Bowlers Yadu Satheesan, Maeez Vhora, and Lalantha Fernando have also been key contributors.
In 4th Grade, emerging talents Matthew Hernyk and Ryan Belsak have impressed with the bat, supported by the ever-reliable Sam French. Co-captain Ashden Tracey and Josh House have led the attack with wickets aplenty, helping the side remain unbeaten heading into the busy pre-Christmas period.
Club stalwart and Greater Northern Raider Jonathan “Chappy” Chapman recently celebrated his 150th game for Westbury, adding to his 93 appearances for the Raiders. A true servant of northern Tasmanian cricket, Chapman boasts an extraordinary record of nine 1st Grade premierships, three Greater Northern Cup titles and two T20 flags.
Off the field, the Shamrocks have also launched their own club podcast, “ShamWow”, hosted by Liam Ryan, Kieren Hume, Alec Crosswell, and Daniel Murfet. With five episodes already on Spotify, it’s quickly become a favourite for local cricket fans eager to stay up to date with all things Shamrocks.
