There’s something special about spring in the Meander Valley. With longer days, blooming gardens, and crisp mountain air, it’s the perfect time to stretch your legs and explore the easy town walks of Deloraine and Westbury.

This October, the Great Western Tiers Tourism Association (GWTTA) invites you to enjoy a few relaxing town walks that blend history, culture, and scenery—ideal for a gentle morning wander followed by a long, lazy Sunday lunch.

Letter to the Editor

  1. Deloraine Riverbank Walk

A favourite among locals and visitors alike, the Riverbank Walk follows the Meander River through the heart of Deloraine. Starting from the Deloraine Train Park, this easy loop features picturesque bridges, public art installations, heritage buildings, and parklands that come alive in spring. It’s flat, accessible, and perfect for all ages.

  1. Westbury Village Green and Town Walk

Westbury is famous for its English-style village green, one of the few remaining in Australia. A casual stroll around the green leads to a network of quiet streets lined with Georgian and Victorian architecture. Interpretive signs tell the stories of early settlers, and local cafés make perfect stopping points.

  1. Deloraine Sculpture Trail

This self-guided walk extends the riverbank path and showcases dozens of sculptures by local and international artists. Inspired by Tasmania’s landscape and heritage, the pieces make for a creative and thought-provoking journey through town. Pick up a trail map from the Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre.

  1. Westbury Heritage Walk

Step back in time with this signposted walk past heritage listed cottages, churches, and public buildings. Learn about Westbury’s history while enjoying gardens in full spring bloom. The walk is easily completed in under an hour and offers plenty of photo opportunities.

After enjoying the relaxed pace and charm of our towns, why not treat yourself to a leisurely spring lunch? Whether it’s classic pub fare in Westbury or a fresh, locally inspired meal at a café in Deloraine, the Meander Valley offers a variety of delicious options to suit every palate.

At GWTTA, we believe weekends are best spent reconnecting with place—and spring is the perfect time to explore what’s right in front of us. These town walks prove that adventure can be just a few steps away, with no hiking boots required.
